American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has exacerbated delays due to weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were delayed on the weekend, and the secretary said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries directly.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports said flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - among the peak after the closure started.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on the weekend, making it the second-longest halt in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the number of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff concentrating on the flight paths, not on the finances at their households," Duffy said.
