Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Blocked Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators of the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the introduction for an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
The entrepreneur, that established the business with his partner, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual collection showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Parent Company
The recent development escalates the ongoing disagreement among the internationally recognized dessert company and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that the parent company along with their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol of Solidarity
The entrepreneur stated through social media how he's developing a new watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions regarding naming options plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its coloration, that match the colors in Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series is being created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first established in 2016 for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts plus Future Plans
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to develop other ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from speaking about openly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, following decades with the organization, citing concerns regarding how its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can actualise the social mission, the values which it was founded on while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
