Blast Takes Three Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Operation in Northern Italy
Three police officers were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly intentional gas explosion at a country home in Italy's north.
How It Happened
The blast occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.
The three officers killed belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Investigation Developments
Two individuals were taken into custody at the site and a third person who ran away after the blast was apprehended soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.
The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location showed the building turned into a heap of debris.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who mentioned that efforts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The leader of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was subject to an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.
Negotiators had been sent to talk with the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member set off the blast.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno told reporters.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he explained.
Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the Interior Minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a emergency responder.
Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
He was convinced the explosion had taken place on a floor above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, likely the gas cylinders being activated”.
Community Reaction
“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told local news, mentioning that the three had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Minister of Defence Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the trio of personnel who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
