Line of Duty Announced for 7th Series on the British Broadcaster
The beloved crime series AC-12 will make a comeback for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast this spring, according to the network.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."
The last series concluded in 2021 with a finale that drew in more than 17 million viewers. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat corruption within the law enforcement.
Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Complex Case
An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the unit return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected plot developments."
Show History
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular television series of the past ten years, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six drew the extended plot about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a new season is now being produced.
