A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind assisted us verify the video.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
