SNAP Payments Set to Cease for Tens of Millions Throughout Ongoing Government Closure

USDA officials stated recently that nutrition assistance payments from a major federal social assistance programs will not be distributed in November amid the persistent federal closure.

Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks

The federal closure was in nearly a month at the time of the statement, which followed appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives urging the department to access reserve accounts to cover November's food assistance.

“Bottom line, the well has run dry,” officials announced. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” on 1 November.

National Consequences

Tens of millions of people count on the regular assistance, according to official statistics. In certain states, like one southwestern state, reliance on the program affects one-fifth of the population.

A memo obtained by a major news agency indicated that USDA officials would not access contingency funding to cover next month's assistance.

Political Stalemate

Republicans and Democrats continue to disagree over how to support and resume the federal government.

A statement from the leader of a budget research center suggested that the administration could have acted to take earlier action to avoid interruption in payments.

“They had the ability and responsibility taken steps before now to make arrangements to utilize available money,” the remarks concluded. “Conversely, they might decide against it for potential political benefit” as conservative leaders work to push upper chamber Democrats to approve a spending bill that would reopen government operations.

Emergency Measures

Governors in two affected states activated emergency protocols this week to make money available to combat potential hunger expecting nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
