Citizens have assembled throughout the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack resulted in in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others captured back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The bloodthirsty adversaries have struck forcefully, but they have not broken us," the leader added on that day.

He also promised to "achieve all the aims of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the removal of the Hamas administration and the promise that Gaza will never again present a danger to Israel".

Memorial Gatherings Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but gatherings still took place across the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was organized in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Peace Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, Israeli and Hamas representatives gathered in the Egyptian coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of mediated discussions to review the conditions of the agreement.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of negotiations began at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to ensure Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet produce any significant progress," but pointed out that intermediaries are striving to close the gaps between the conflicting groups.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A lasting truce
  • The swap of the hostages still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of troops from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • Post-war governance of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's public square earlier, young Hagar - whose brother endured the attack on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No place seems like home anymore and until every captive return no one will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home once more, we can relax again. Then we can begin to rebuild," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the relatives of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Demonstrator a participant explained: "We must do every compromise necessary for the abducted to come back home. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about 70% of the population prefer the war to end in return for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Situation

At the area of Nova festival, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers reported the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, bombardments were reported in the early hours of Tuesday in the western Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the evening comes, the fear arrives with it," displaced Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. During nighttime we are sleeping together, embracing, especially my little child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will resume to us."

Health Situation

Al-Shifa hospital in the urban area reported it had taken in the bodies of six people by the midday, including a trio who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis indicated two more victims had been delivered. A person was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking assistance to the south region, health workers said.
