Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression So Long As England's Star Leaves Egotism at the Door.

One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory is probably going to require help from Jude Bellingham, although it is also on the midfielder to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is returned to Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.

The midfielder had much to ponder after being left out of the previous squad. He watched England qualify at next summer’s World Cup in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel talk about loving the group’s energy and values. Inevitably, he has responded in top form, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against Barcelona and the Italian side. He had to be picked; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham concentrating on pressuring the opposition rather than his own colleagues. Ultimately, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to starting a conflict with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that representing the national team is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, for his part, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after showing that he is not afraid to make big calls.

“There is no problem regarding him, and no concern with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham displays the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he has. Everyone need to help him and build an environment where he can use his drive towards opponents and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”

Bellingham dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, how about another talent? This is a further gifted No 10 requiring love and guidance. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in Manchester City’s win versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at available. Morgan Rogers and Eze have earned their places and there will be compelling reasons to pick Cole Palmer once he recovers from a ongoing injury. Is selecting five No 10s to the World Cup be too many? The previous manager failed to discover the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, cramping Harry Kane’s influence as a result.

It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it harms the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with fast wide players on the flanks. Clarity helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. The new call-up, selected for the first time, is a No 8 and the recalled Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the other flank?’” he said. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for years. I think it matches his abilities best.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has obvious passion to play football, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.

“I think he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he profits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? What are my to defend?

Tuchel talked about one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of many candidates. Several players, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is recognized for his good displays for Manchester City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, Tuchel suggested using Foden as a deep-lying striker against one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for testing tactics.

At the same time, it is also a chance to get the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that one must look back to the latter setting up Kane to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to find the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the duo linked up for a goal. The coach will be aware that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“At this point at some point it becomes the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of the player under scrutiny. He cannot even be assured to begin versus the upcoming opponents. The manager wants him committed but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside the ego outside. It will make a powerful squad into an even better one.
