Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the hit series wrapping up—and Season 2 greenlit and underway—the creative team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will impact the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Incredible Audience Reaction
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being tickled to death,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to tailor anything,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
A Pressing Query: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”
Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and we're in there,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Then again, one could always use the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
